Protean Electric has officially announced that its next-generation in-wheel motor, under the ProteanDrive family, is production-ready and slated for integration into electric vehicles beginning in 2026.Key Advancements & Capabilities

  • The new motor, designated Pm18 2500, is designed to deliver 220 kW per wheel and 2,500 Nm of torque. 
  • Protean claims this design achieves cost parity with twin e-axle systems, making it economically competitive with current drivetrain solutions. 
  • By eliminating conventional components such as drive shafts, transmissions, and central differentials, the in-wheel solution can simplify vehicle architecture and reduce overall component complexity.

  • The design also enables improved modularity, space efficiency, and performance tuning, such as torque vectoring at the wheel level. 
 

Commercial Prospects & Vehicle Integration

  • An unnamed European OEM has already nominated Protean’s motor for use in a high-performance electric vehicle slated to enter production in 2026. 
  • The performance expectations are ambitious: an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in under 3 seconds is targeted when deploying the motors on multiple wheels. 
  • According to Protean, using in-wheel motors can help reduce vehicle manufacturing costs by cutting out conventional drivetrain parts and simplifying assembly processes.
